Borusan EnBW Enerji has chosen GE Renewable Energy for the construction of the 138 MW Saros wind farm in Turkey. The project, which will include 27 Cypress units, will be the largest onshore wind turbine project using GE's turbine. GE will manufacture Cypress' revolutionary two-piece wings at its manufacturing plant in Bergama, Izmir.

GE Renewable Energy announced today that Borusan EnBW Enerji has signed an agreement to supply 27 Cypress units for the 138 MW Saros Project, which corresponds to the energy needs of 190,000 homes in Turkey. Borusan EnBW Enerji will operate Cypress turbines with a rotor diameter of 158 meters with a power of 5.X MW.

This project, which is GE's first order in Turkey for the Cypress platform, will be the company's largest onshore wind turbine site in this field. The project will also be one of GE's largest wind farms in Turkey. The agreement also includes GE's 10-year service agreement.

Cypress' revolutionary two-piece blade will be produced at the LM Wind Power wind turbine blade production facility in Bergama, Izmir. The company recently announced its decision to invest an additional $30 million by the end of 2019 to expand the existing facility and add 300 new employees. The towers of the wind turbines will also be produced in Turkey.

Mehmet Acarla, General Manager of Borusan EnBW Energy, said: "We are determined to develop our country's renewable energy sources and realize our vision of becoming the sector leader in wind energy. Our Saros WPP project is an expression of this determination. Saros RES, in which we have invested a total of 190 million US dollars, will have an installed capacity of 138 MW and a total annual production of 530 GWh. The energy needs of 190,000 households will be met and 297,000 tons of carbon emissions will be prevented. We are happy and proud to bring such a facility to our country."

GE Renewable Energy Middle East, North Africa and Turkey President and CEO Dr. Manar Al Moneef said: "Borusan EnBW Enerji is among the largest wind energy investors in Turkey. We are excited to work together and help our customer achieve their renewable energy goals. GE is also very proud to bring more wind energy to Turkey and to invest in both employment and production areas for the further development of this industry. Our goal is to help our customers reduce their energy costs every day, and our Cypress platform offers the ideal solution to make the most of the country's wind speed and environment." Cypress enables significant improvements in annual energy production, increased efficiency in operability, the potential for better logistics and positioning, and ultimately more value for customers. The two-piece blade design enables the production of even longer blades while improving logistics to reduce costs; offers more positioning options in places that were inaccessible in the past.
