What is the ferrule?

The cable ferrule is the connection consumable that is attached to the ends of flexible cables with strings, terminating the cable and providing a solid conductivity. After the ferrule is installed, the cable is connected to circuit elements such as circuit breakers, contactors and fuses.

Why use the ferrule?

Due to its superior flexibility, long life and vibration resistance, insulated stranded cable is the ideal choice for most electrical switchboards. These cables are formed by combining very thin copper wires and winding them with an insulating material. If the insulation material on the cable is peeled off and it is tried to be connected to the terminal ends, the cable ends will break up. This will cause the cable to lose its strength and durability.

At the same time, if the multi-core cable is connected to the terminal without a load and current is passed over it, short-circuiting can occur at the connection point as the cable end is dispersed and corrosion may occur in time. The connection efficiency will also be reduced, since not every point of the dispersed wire will touch the terminals.

Corrosion refers to an increase in contact contact resistance. As the contact resistance increases, the temperature inside the connection increases and leads to a higher current. A contact resistance above 0.43 mΩ can cause loss of insulation, short circuits and burns within the cabinet.By using the cable ferrule, a rigid cable resistance can be given to the stranded flexible cable at the entrance of the connection points. The ferrules significantly simplify installation, increase safety and reduce the risk of costly panel failure.

The graph below shows the change in contact resistance of a single-core rigid cable (blue), a multi-core stripped cable (burgundy), and a multi-core stripped and ferrule cable (green) over time. As can be seen, the contact resistance of many stranded cables with ferrules is almost equal to the resistance of a single stranded hard cable.

How should the ferrule be used

1-The cable should be cut properly without causing any angle or damage to the vessels. The length of the cut must be made depending on the length of the ferrule and the outer diameter of the wire.

2-After installing the ferrule, the conductor bundle must not protrude more than 0.5 mm.

3-Cable ends should be collected in such a way that they do not break loose

4-It should be placed in place so that there is no conductive wire outside the plastic ring.

5-Ferrule should be tightened with clamping apparatus

6-Then the strength of the prepared cable should be checked by gently pulling.
