Rockwell Automation develops AI module to improve industrial manufacturing
The new AI module simplifies decision-making by providing predictive analysis without the need for a data expert. Industrial workers can now predict production problems using data from their equipment and improve processes with existing automation and control capabilities. The new Factory Talk Analytics LogixAI module , formerly known as Project Sherlock, uses artificial intelligence (AI) to detect production anomalies and alert workers when needed, as well as to investigate and intervene. Many of the current analytical technologies require serious expertise in both data science and industrial processes. But this add-on module in Control Logix controllers does the data professional's job, reducing the workload. It sits directly inside a control line and transmits controller data from the background to develop predictive models. The module can continuously monitor a production operation, detecting anomalies against its derived insight. Jonathan Wise, Product Manager at Rockwell Automation , said: "The Factory Talk Analytics LogixAI module makes predictive analysis more accessible for workers to make better production decisions. The module learns Control Logix and alerts operators and technicians if something changes unexpectedly. This allows them to solve problems related to production quality and maintain the integrity of the process." For example, the module helps operators detect performance deviations in equipment such as mixers that can affect production quality. It can also be used as a virtual sensor. Workers do not need to read values such as 'moisture in a packaged food product'. The module can virtually analyse variables in assets on the production line, such as sprayers, dryers and incinerators. Workers can be alerted when problems arise by configuring alarms on the human machine interface (HMI) or a dashboard. The module's features will develop further in the future, helping workers focus on solving problems and automating the optimization of processes. The Factory Talk Analytics Logix AI module is the latest addition to the Rockwell Automation Factory Talk Analytics family of products. Another product in the portfolio is Factory Talk Analytics for devices, which learns the structure of the automation system to alert workers to problems with various devices. The LogixAI module is evolving by learning the application of the automation system and helping to detect anomalies in its overall function. Both products work individually but benefit each other in future iterations. The Factory Talk Analytics platform brings together data from multiple sources to enable workers to gain new insights. Both Factory Talk Analytics for devices and the LogixAI module become data sources for the expanding platform.
