The Energy Outlook study, which was conducted by Sabancı University Istanbul International Center for Energy and Climate (IICEC), Turkey was conducted by the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Dönmez, Sabancı University Founding Board of Trustees Chair Güler Sabancı, and the International Energy Agency (IEA) President Dr. It was introduced to the public with the participation of Fatih Birol and IICEC Research Director Bora Şekip Güray. The study, which is a first in Turkey and an example for developing countries, reveals the future perspective of the energy sector
Completed with a detailed and comprehensive modeling infrastructure and scenario analysis approach developed by IICEC, the Turkey Energy Outlook study, which is a FIRST in Turkey and an example in its field in developing countries, reveals the future perspective of the energy sector. In the triangle of Public-Industry-Academia success, this important study, which will shed light on policymakers, investors, the business world and academic studies in terms of its scope and content, presents ten concrete energy policy proposals.
Sabancı University Founding Board of Trustees Chair Güler Sabancı stated that Sabancı University Istanbul International Center for Energy and Climate (IICEC) has continued to grow under the roof of the University since its establishment in 2010 and said, "Turkey Energy Outlook study has also been a meaningful product in the twentieth year of our University and the tenth year of IICEC."
GÜLER SABANCI: "THIS STUDY, WHICH IS AN INDEPENDENT AND OBJECTIVE UNIVERSITY PRODUCT, IS A FIRST AND A PIONEER IN TURKEY."
Güler Sabancı continued her speech as follows: "I define this as a success triangle. IICEC is the example in Turkey of this Success Triangle in which the public, the private sector and industry, which are investors and sector players, and the Academy with its research capabilities work, produce and create value with its policy maker and regulation function."
Güler Sabancı emphasized that today they came together for the Turkey Energy Outlook study developed within this success triangle and continued: "I know that IICEC carries out this work through a participatory process through meetings and negotiations with important stakeholders from both the public and private sectors and the industry. Therefore, it will stand out not only with its academic quality, but also with its feature of being a guidebook that will guide the sector. This study, as you know, is a first and a pioneer in Turkey. With its methodology and quality, it will also be an example for developing country economies. Dr. Fatih Birol both put forward the idea of this work and followed it since the beginning, and I thank him. We have 5 main goals: a safer, more efficient, more competitive, more technology-driven and more sustainable energy future. I think that this study will be positioned as an independent and objective University study , will be read and followed with interest in the sector and will be a guide with a future perspective.
Turkey's energy sector has been an example to other sectors for many years in attracting foreign investment . I believe that this report will serve as a very useful reference source in increasing the investment attractiveness of our developing energy sector and attracting modern, innovative energy and technology investments to our country."
FATİH BIROL: A PIONEERING STUDY FOR TEO DEVELOPING COUNTRIES
President of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Dr. Fatih Birol thanked those who contributed to the preparation of the report and said, "I thought it would be very good if this study, which was done in many countries, was also done in Turkey. IICEC implemented this. This study is important in terms of revealing trends in energy and showing where it can be achieved under which conditions. I believe that the study examines the opportunities in the energy sector for a safer, efficient, competitive, technology-oriented and sustainable energy future and is a pioneering study for developing countries."
Stating that as IEA, they examine all the data in the world every day, Dr. Fatih Birol said that the energy sector in the world had a year that it had not experienced so far and experienced its biggest shock to date. Stating that they are happy with 2 good news from Turkey in this process, Dr. Fatih Birol said, "First, electricity use in Turkey has reached the pre-pandemic level in 2019, and it is exceeding it. The second is the recent natural gas discovery."
10 RECOMMENDED POLICIES IN TURKEY ENERGY OUTLOOK
IICEC Research Director Bora Şekip Güray stated that in this study, which they carried out with a comprehensive and holistic energy model and scenario analysis, they looked at all energy sectors, resources and technologies with a detailed and long-term perspective and as a concrete outcome of the study, they presented 10 proposals for a safer, efficient, competitive technology, focused and sustainable energy future that supports energy policy objectives and at the same time brings new openings. did. Güray stated that this study, which is also pioneering in developing countries in terms of its content and methodology, is a guiding study for sector stakeholders that sheds light on current developments such as the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and the recent natural gas discovery.
Bora Şekip Güray summarized the 10 recommendations in the report within the framework of the TEO findings:
MINISTER OF ENERGY AND NATURAL RESOURCES FATIH DÖNMEZ: "THIS REPORT, WHICH WAS PREPARED FOR THE FIRST TIME, HAS BECOME A VERY IMPORTANT RESOURCE THAT WE CAN USE TO SHAPE OUR IDEAS"
Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Dönmez, who attended the Turkey Energy Outlook launch meeting and said that the world economies will step on more gas to compensate for the losses after the pandemic, said, "This will revive the falling energy demand, especially in Europe and the USA. This will open new windows of opportunity for energy investments. However, the world cannot continue on the new path with the old methods after this time. As clearly stated in the report, a future in which renewable energy and energy efficiency are at the center is waiting for us." Minister Dönmez also emphasized energy technologies and said that Turkey wants to be an effective player in its region and that domestic technology will play a big role in this sense.
Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Dönmez said, "Until today, we were saying that there should be other energy studies from us and we should also benefit. Sabancı University IICEC has fulfilled our wish. This report, prepared by Sabancı University IICEC as a first in Turkey, has become a very important resource that we can use to shape our ideas. I would like to thank those who contributed."
