Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Dönmez said, "We aim to increase the share of domestic and renewable resources in our electricity production to two-thirds by 2023." Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Dönmez attended the G20 Environment and Energy Ministers' Meeting held in Japan. Speaking at the session titled "The Future of Energy" of the meeting, Dönmez emphasized that for a sustainable future, it is imperative to benefit from energy efficiency, renewable energy, fossil fuels and nuclear energy technologies. Dönmez, stating that Turkey follows a policy of resource diversification in energy, said, "We aim to increase the share of domestic and renewable resources in our electricity production to two-thirds by 2023. Last month, a wind tender with a capacity of one gigawatt was successfully completed. Turkey joined the 'One gigawatt' club in geothermal energy in 2017. Our goal is to exceed two gigawatts by 2023." Referring to Turkey's National Energy Efficiency Action Plan, Minister Dönmez stated that with the strategy to be implemented within this framework, primary energy consumption will be reduced by 14 percent with an investment of 11 billion dollars to be made until 2023. Dönmez, underlining that the large coal reserves in Turkey will be utilized, said, "We attach great importance to the application of clean coal technologies. Completely excluding coal also hinders R&D and improvements in this area. Therefore, they are condemned to old and inefficient technologies. Turkey has a strong will to include nuclear energy in its primary energy supply as of 2023 by commissioning the first unit of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant." Stating that nuclear energy and fossil fuels are necessary to increase the use of intermittent renewable energy, Dönmez said: "We also attach importance to flexibility in natural gas. Turkey can also provide flexibility to its region by building world-class LNG terminals, including FSRUs, transmission and gas storage infrastructure investments. Like energy sources, energy innovation needs to be diversified. We have launched an initiative to integrate artificial intelligence, IoT, cybersecurity and electric mobility into our energy portfolio at a faster pace. We are also taking important steps in the search for sources. Our hydrocarbon exploration and drilling activities continue. With the establishment of Enerji Piyasaları İşletme AŞ in Turkey, the wholesale electricity and gas trade platform was put into operation. We aim to bring our resources to the economy with the help of the private sector on a win-win basis."
