GE completes first-of-its-kind control system modernization at Baymina Power Plant

• Within the framework of the project, in order to shorten turbine commissioning times, reduce maintenance costs and improve reliability, the transition from the ALSPA steam turbine control system to the state-of-the-art Mark VIe* control system was made.

GE modernizes rotor voltage control at ENGIE Group's Baymina power plant in Turkey. The transition from ALSPA steam turbine control systems to the state-of-the-art Mark VIe* control system has been successful. The project, which is a first in its field, incorporates new control technologies.In this transition, the basic hardware infrastructure of the system is also fully protected. As a result of retrofitting, the steam turbine improved its flexibility, reliability and availability. The plant was allowed to make smarter operational decisions with data analytics for the control system.

Hayati Yıldırım, Baymina Engineering and Maintenance Manager, said about the modernization project: "Since our Baymina power plant was put into operation about 15 years ago, it was now important for us to modernize our control system. Leveraging GE's hardware and software solutions, we will now be able to respond to requests faster. At the same time we will be able to reduce maintenance costs. The project is the first modernization project to transition from the ALSPA P320 V1 control technology developed by Alstom to GE's Mark VIe system. Our cost-effective solutions including engineering, commissioning and training processes within the scope of the project; Since it protects the footprint of the control system, the control system program, the input and output modules and the field wiring, it shortens downtimes and prevents production losses.

The project also used Turbomax, a new steam turbine voltage calculation tool that shortens commissioning times and improves reliability and availability. Turbomax maintains the balance between commissioning time and rotor life. The machine increases the efficiency of operations by increasing the accuracy of voltage calculations.

ENGIE's 770-megawatt gas-fired Baymina power plant operates in Ankara and meets the electricity needs of 1.6 million houses with its energy production for the capital. Combined cycle power plant; It began operations in 2003 with two GE-signed 9FA.03 gas turbines, each with a power of 235 megawatts, and Alstom's signature 325-megawatt Alstom DKY224-4N4/B steam turbine.
