R&M Has Safely Implemented Istanbul Airport's Digital Infrastructure.

With its secure cabling infrastructure, R&M has connected thousands of cameras, card readers and data centers with 115,000 connections installed in the first section of the airport.

Airports, which are shown to be one of the most advanced and secure facilities in the world, earn this reputation thanks to the latest and secure IT systems. Most of the pioneering work in this area is being carried out by the Istanbul Grand Airport (IGA), which became operational this year. Ranked as the largest airport in the world, Istanbul Airport is also the world's first digital airport with basic security, communication and IT functions based on a network provided by R&M.

Underlining that R&M has extensive experience in the aviation sector, Istanbul New Airport CIO and Deputy General Manager Ersin İnankul said, "This experience of R&M played an important role in our choice when determining the provider of the network infrastructure of our project.Another key factor in choosing R&M was the foresight that the cables could guarantee outstanding signal transmission performance and maintain this performance for decades without being affected by external factors. The quality of the R&M cabling system in the project allowed us to operate 9,000 security cameras and 3,000 card readers in real time, confident that they would be protected against any transmission attempts or losses. We're also consolidating 5,000 Wi-Fi access points that provide a full range of WLAN at the airport. That's why these access points need to be smooth and error-free. The cabling infrastructure established in our area; it also ensures that customs, security personnel and police force are connected to information technologies."

Customized Solutions

Ersin İnankul emphasized that the cabling in the project should be designed specifically for this mega project with many aspects, "R&M experts understand our needs and can customize their solutions to suit us. This was the biggest advantage that set R&M apart for us from other service providers. I can list other important criteria in the project as delivery reliability, safety and cost-effectiveness of R&M products. In addition, thanks to their modular design, the wiring systems were installed modularly expandable in just a few simple steps according to the expansion of the airport."

Michel Riva, CEO of R&M, said that with this project, R&M once again proved its ability to support large cable projects with custom cabling solutions.

In the first phase of construction, R&M provided 5,400 km of copper cable and 3,270 km of fiber optic cabling. The installation also required fiber-optic distribution cabinets, patch panels, and 115,000 connector ports. In addition, special requirements such as a color coding system had to be met in each area.

Highest density fiber platform

R&M equipped the airport's data center with Netscale, a fiber optic management platform that provides connectivity density of up to 120 ports in a 1U 19-inch rack unit. In addition, the R&MinteliPhy digital management and monitoring system was installed at the center. This system automates the monitoring and operation of the data network from a central location. The system can also monitor unwanted changes to the infrastructure or unwanted interference with the connectors in real time.

R&M has guaranteed a 25-year lifetime and unconditional reliability for this cabling infrastructure in the field. Istanbul Airport wants to guarantee 99.982 percent reliability (TIER III) for its passengers, logistics companies and airlines. In the long term, as many as 200 million passengers are expected to use the airport each year. The newly opened first section of the airport has an annual capacity of 90 million passengers. Three additional construction phases are planned to be completed, which will increase capacity to 200 million people over the next 15 years.
